Yesterday was the first true snow fall. The morning started warm and rainy then grew cold and snowy.  Rowan watched the large puffy flakes from the front window. It was the perfect day to try a new scone recipe and make some felt hats with ears.

I found this scone recipe at What Do I Know? It may be my favorite Ive made. Just the right amount of sweetness. The only problem is they are rather soft and I prefer more hard scones. I baked the scones cut down to 16 instead of baking the 4 rounds then cutting them. I think next time i will cut the 16 down to smaller ones before baking them. Mmmmmm… so good!

My birthday is Tuesday the 11th, so this was my ‘birthday fun weekend.’ It is always a good time when Jean and Sam are around. Ma, Pa and Lily also came today. Lily wanted to be Rowan, Oliver, and Muca’s best friend so most of their time was spent hiding in the pigloo and under the bed with Lily waiting for them to emerge. Mom made a red velvet cheesecake… SUPER awesome. This picture doesn’t show, but this cake was about 4 inches tall.

Besides having birthday fun, we have been unpacking studio things onto new shelves. Almost everything is out of boxes from the bedroom and in the studio YAY. Maybe someday we will have the work tables done.

The cats love all the boxes and toys on the slippery floor. If it can’t be used as a studio yet, why not a cat playroom!

Everything is moved in (not all put away) and the cats love it. The room pictured is the studio… well, it will be once we get the work and computer tables finished. The only problem we have with the apartment so far is the occasional person parked in our space, *grumble grumble.* I love being able to walk right out to the river and the neighborhoods surrounding us are filled with historical homes and lots of trees so they are nice to run in. This fall has been hectic but awesome! I am excited for my birthday, more fall, the holidays, winter, and creating in a new space.

Annual fall trip to the Magical Forest

I am beginning to create.

Saturday Seth and I spent the day at the Black Swamp Arts Festival in Bowling Green with Brenda and her family (Brenda’s website).They are wonderful people, and Brenda is a talented artist. It was wonderful to talk about art and producing art, and how to get inspired. It gave me some confidence and a little push. Getting started again is very challenging and after today, I realize it might take a bit to find what I am comfortable with and how I want to create. So far, I feel like I am relearning even the simple things like how to use color and tools. It’s encouraging however, that I realize when something is wrong and is not what it should be. Hopefully I have the ability to improve quickly and get myself back to my previous skills. I don’t want to get back in the same direction conceptually because I want everything to be relavent to me now, just technically. Remembering that I don’t need to start out making show-quality, highly conceptual pieces of work is key. Simple simple simple. Have fun… enjoy the materials, textures, and process. Do it for myself.

I broke out the oil paint. It has been over a year, at least, since I have used oils. It felt wonderful. I found myself making mistakes, but I know that they are mistake. Getting the right colors, line and technique varietion, and tone. It feels good to play.

This was an unusual way to paint a study for me. Usually, I go full on color as a first and last coat, working my way through the subject using plains of color. This time, I was very light with color and detail, then went back through putting darks and lights and a few more details. I don’t think this is very successful as a piece but it has been a good start. More to come… I promise.
